João Ferreira, ANAMM’s president, emphasized in a press briefing following a meeting with President Daniel Chapo in Maputo that they are prepared to collaborate for improved service delivery and overall development of the country. “We came to say that we are ready to help in the matter of serving everyone better and better,” he stated.
The primary focus of the new national development company will be the procurement of essential equipment, fostering collaboration among municipalities to address local challenges effectively. Ferreira, who serves as the mayor of Chimoio, highlighted that this initiative will support municipalities in their responsibility for local governance and public service provision.
Since October 2022, Mozambique has experienced significant social unrest, following contentious election results favoring incumbent President Daniel Chapo of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo). Protests led by the former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane have raised issues related to electoral integrity, escalating living costs, and various social matters.
The civil unrest has led to tragic consequences, with reports of at least 327 fatalities, including minors, and approximately 750 individuals wounded during protests, according to monitoring by the electoral platform Decide. The government has corroborated that at least 80 deaths occurred and highlighted extensive property damage, with 1,677 commercial buildings, 177 schools, and 23 health facilities being targeted during the unrest.
