Yemen’s Houthis have escalated military actions against US vessels and Israeli-linked ships in solidarity with Gaza. Their attacks coincide with US airstrikes in Yemen, resulting in significant casualties. The Houthis vowed continued support for Palestinians amid claims of intensified confrontation.
The Yemeni Houthi group announced on Tuesday that they have conducted attacks on the USS Harry Truman aircraft carrier and a US destroyer in the Red Sea, marking their third assault within 48 hours. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree declared that “the American aggressor bears the full responsibility for the consequences of militarising the Red Sea and expanding the scope of confrontation,” emphasizing that US airstrikes on Yemen disrupt international maritime navigation.
In response, Washington carried out subsequent airstrikes on Yemen on Monday, targeting an iron factory in Al-Hudaydah province. This action follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s significant military operation initiated on Saturday against the Houthis, which appears to be a precursor to an extended campaign.
According to Houthi health ministry spokesperson Anees Alsbahi, these attacks have resulted in at least 53 casualties, including five children and two women, and have left 98 individuals injured. The Houthis have also been targeting ships associated with Israeli interests in the Red and Arabian seas as part of their support for the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis condemned the Israel occupation’s aggressive actions in Gaza, pledging heightened support for Palestinians. Their Supreme Political Council asserted, “The Palestinian people will not be left alone in this battle, and Yemen will continue its support and assistance, and escalate confrontation steps.” Reports indicate that Israel is taking precautions by preparing shelters in anticipation of potential retaliatory actions from Yemen.
The Houthis’ recent escalation, including attacks on US military assets and regional shipping linked to Israel, signals a significant intensification of their commitment to support Gaza. The humanitarian toll in Yemen has been substantial, with rising casualties due to US airstrikes. This burgeoning conflict highlights the complexities of regional tensions and the interconnected nature of military actions amidst ongoing Palestine-Israel hostilities.
