Tourism constitutes a vital aspect of Lebanon’s economy, which saw a contraction of 7.1% in its real GDP last year due to conflict-related setbacks. The World Bank reports that Lebanon’s GDP has declined nearly 40% since 2019, necessitating a reconstruction cost of about $11 billion, with significant investment required in key sectors, including tourism. Mr. Eidhagen emphasized the current favorable conditions for launching this new route, attributing it to regional normalization and the improved security climate.
The airline will operate Airbus A321 aircraft for the Beirut flights, accommodating 230 passengers. With one-way fares starting at Dh359, these prices are reported to be significantly lower than current market rates, aiming to attract a diverse passenger demographic, including the Lebanese diaspora and short-term travelers to Beirut. The intention is to foster a more frequent travel culture between the UAE and Lebanon.
Mr. Eidhagen mentioned the airline’s commitment to creating a sustainable market for low-cost travel. With the expectation of achieving a load factor starting in the mid to high 80% range, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi aims to fill its flights efficiently over time. The airline has also temporarily suspended its Athens route to accommodate these new services.
In addition to the Beirut route, a new destination to Gabala, Azerbaijan, will be introduced on June 19, expanding Wizz Air Abu Dhabi’s offerings.
