The artillery systems, provided as military aid from North Korea to the Russian army, were camouflaged within a forested area and reinforced with protective ‘grills’ to shield against FPV drones.
Drone operators detected these self-propelled howitzers, which were subsequently targeted by Ukrainian rocket artillery employing high-explosive and cluster munitions. This operation marked the second successful engagement with the Koksan systems during the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict, with a prior strike occurring a month earlier by the 412th NEMESIS Regiment in the Luhansk region.
The M1978 Koksan is the longest-range artillery system currently in service with the North Korean military, featuring a 170-mm gun capable of firing at targets up to 60 kilometers away. Its design focus includes the capability to strike significant targets, such as Seoul, from positions north of the demilitarized zone, and it is now being utilized by Russian forces in their military operations against Ukraine to mitigate substantial artillery losses.
Furthermore, as of March 18, 76 combat encounters had been recorded between Ukrainian and Russian armed forces, with actions continuing on six fronts, particularly intensifying in the Kursk region.
