Tragic Attack in Omdurman: Seven Killed and 43 Injured in RSF Assault

On March 18, an artillery attack by the RSF in Omdurman killed seven civilians and injured 43, including many children. Despite the alarm from state authorities and the severity of injuries reported, the RSF has not commented. This incident is part of a larger conflict in Sudan that has caused significant humanitarian crises since mid-April 2023.

On March 18, a tragic artillery attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) occurred in Omdurman, north of Khartoum, resulting in the deaths of at least seven civilians, including two children. The state government reported that 43 additional individuals were injured, with many among them being children aged between four and twelve. Immediately following the incident, the wounded were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

The RSF targeted neighborhoods in the Karari locality during a volunteer prayer session, where numerous children were playing football. A paramedic from Al-Nao Hospital reported that the majority of injuries were limb-related, caused by flying projectiles. Several victims required amputations, while some suffered severe head injuries necessitating treatment unavailable at the facility, as noted by the paramedic.

Despite the severity of the incident, the RSF has not provided any comment. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has previously accused the RSF of conducting bombings in the densely populated Karari locality, which is home to several military installations, including the Wadi Seidna military area.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been immersed in a catastrophic conflict between the SAF and RSF, reportedly resulting in the deaths of over 29,683 individuals, based on figures from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project. Furthermore, this ongoing struggle has displaced more than 15 million people, according to estimates from the International Organization for Migration.

The recent artillery attack in Omdurman underscores the ongoing violence in Sudan, with the RSF’s actions leading to civilian casualties and injuries. The lack of immediate responses from the RSF raises concerns over accountability in the conflict, which has already caused significant loss of life and widespread displacement. Efforts to address the humanitarian crisis remain crucial as the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate.
