Sudan’s inflation surged to 142.34% in February 2025, significantly affecting rural areas with a 155.84% increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Urban areas also experienced inflation of 123.32%. The UN aims to assist 21 million vulnerable people, although funding shortages threaten these critical efforts.

In February 2025, Sudan’s annual inflation rate surged to 142.34%, as reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). The Consumer Price Index (CPI) reveals that rural areas have been disproportionately affected, showcasing an inflation rate of 155.84%, compared to 123.32% in urban areas. The CPI recorded a notable rise from 157847.54 points in February 2024 to 382533.02 points in February 2025, indicating a drastic increase of 224685.48 points.

Additionally, the monthly inflation rate increased by 1.15% from January to February 2025, with the general CPI marking 4346.83 points higher at 382533.02 compared to 378186.19 in January 2025. The food and beverage sector observed a monthly CPI change of 0.78%, rising from 161179.17 points in January to 162439.07 points in February 2025, reflecting a yearly inflation of 128.45%.

In urban areas, the CPI reflected an increase to 273560.25 points for February 2025, up from 122498.23 points the previous year, illustrating an annual inflation rate of 123.32%. Conversely, the rural CPI escalated to 497221.82 points, marking a significant hike of 302871.33 points compared to February 2024.

Amid these alarming inflation rates, the United Nations is striving to provide life-saving assistance to nearly 21 million vulnerable individuals in Sudan throughout 2025. Nonetheless, the UN has highlighted severe funding shortfalls, as only 6.3% of the needed $4.2 billion for humanitarian support has been acquired. The UN states that this dire financial situation poses a grave threat to humanitarian efforts in the country, emphasizing the urgency of assistance during this critical period.

The soaring inflation in Sudan, particularly impacting rural areas, highlights the dire economic situation faced by many citizens. With rural inflation at 155.84% compared to urban’s 123.32%, immediate attention and aid are urgently required. The United Nations’ efforts to assist millions are hindered by funding deficits, further complicating the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
