O&L Group Transitions from Pick n Pay Namibia to Model Brand on July 1

The Ohlthaver & List Group will rebrand Pick n Pay Namibia to Model, effective July 1, after terminating its franchise with Pick n Pay South Africa. This change aims to enhance customer experience while ensuring a sustainable business model. Executive Chairman Sven Thieme and Managing Director Graeme Mouton highlight the initiative’s significance in catering to Namibian needs and revitalizing retail operations.

The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group has announced the transition from Pick n Pay Namibia to its original brand, Model, effective July 1. This change follows the termination of the franchise agreement with Pick n Pay South Africa, which had been in operation for 27 years. O&L previously operated stores under the name ‘Model Supermarket’ before adopting the franchise model.

According to the company’s announcement, “Model will officially replace Pick n Pay Namibia, setting the stage for a bold and inspiring shopping experience.” O&L Executive Chairman Sven Thieme emphasized the significance of this return to the original operating name, stating that this venture is driven by renewed passion and purpose.

Thieme highlighted the company’s long history, noting that O&L’s retail journey started with Model in 1965, and now, after 60 years, they are returning to this legacy but with an enhanced shopping experience. He described the transition as “a bold evolution that will redefine how Namibians shop.”

The launch of the Model brand will commence on July 1, supported by a phased refurbishment strategy aimed at enhancing customer experience. Graeme Mouton, Managing Director of Model, expressed excitement about tailored offerings for Namibian consumers, aiming to set a new standard in grocery retail that caters specifically to local needs.

Mouton articulated that Model is not merely a store, but a “movement” embodying authenticity, care, and passion, which aligns with O&L’s core values. He invited all Namibians to participate in this transformative journey. The O&L Group, through WUM Properties, operates 19 retail outlets under the former Pick n Pay brand.

Last year, Thieme cited financial losses as a reason for the termination of the franchise, indicating that a sustainable business model was essential for securing employees’ futures. O&L aims to regain full control of retail operations to ensure durability and profitability in the future. Earlier reports indicated that Pick n Pay suffered extensive losses, attributed largely to a significant impairment for unprofitable stores, along with increasing operational costs due to power outages in South Africa.

In conclusion, the Ohlthaver & List Group’s transition from Pick n Pay Namibia to the Model brand signifies a strategic move towards sustainability and improved customer experience. With an emphasis on local needs, O&L intends to revitalize its retail operations while remaining committed to its employees’ futures. This rebranding reflects both a return to roots and a vision for a more dynamic shopping environment for Namibians.
