The Mozambican police stated that they utilize “legitimate means” to disperse protesters, acknowledging that injuries may occur during this process. Leonel Muchina, head of the public relations department of the police general command, indicated that after exhausting appeals for peaceful protest, the police sometimes must intervene to prevent vandalism or road blockages.
During a press conference in Maputo, Muchina reiterated the use of “means of dispersing the crowds,” singling out tear gas as an example of their methods. He clarified that any injuries resulting from these measures occur inadvertently. He emphasized that while protesting is a constitutional right, it should not impede the rights of others to move freely, particularly in urgent situations like accessing hospitals.
The police also cautioned participants against being coerced into demonstrations and denounced violent protests for hindering national development. Argumentative demonstrations have emerged since October, initially sparked by Venâncio Mondlane’s rejection of the election results favoring Daniel Chapo.
Although the protests are currently limited in scale, they reflect widespread discontent over rising living costs and other social issues. Reports indicate that since October, approximately 357 individuals have lost their lives during the unrest, including minors, with the government confirming at least 80 fatalities and considerable destruction of public and private property.
