The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party in Uganda has announced its intention to contest the results of the Kawempe North by-election in court. This decision follows a significant victory by Naukoola Luyimbazi of the National Unity Platform, who received 17,764 votes, while the FDC’s candidate, Sadat Mukiibi, secured only 239 votes. The by-election was reportedly marred by violence, including assaults on journalists.
FDC President Patrick Oboi Amuriat expressed dissatisfaction with the electoral results, stating they did not accurately represent the party’s support in the area. He asserted, “The results can never be a reflection of our strength in the division.” Amuriat also indicated that they would seek to recover costs incurred during the electoral process.
He emphasized the need to hold the Electoral Commission accountable, stating, “We will sue the Electoral Commission because they failed to take responsibility.” Reports indicated that at least 15 polling station results were excluded from the final tally, including one where Mukiibi voted. The FDC attributed their candidate’s poor performance to an intimidating environment created by heavy security presence.
Additionally, the FDC is demanding compensation for journalists who were injured or whose equipment was confiscated during the by-election. In a parallel development, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) also voiced concerns about the election results, calling for a forensic audit of the process. NRM Secretary-General Richard Todwong noted in an interview, “We are calling for a forensic audit. Everyone must be investigated.”
The NRM has yet to formally challenge the results in court, although they expressed discontent with the electoral proceedings.
