In Sudan, following the army’s reclamation of territory previously under paramilitary control for nearly two years, Red Crescent workers discovered bodies retrieved from a well, horrifying local residents as they watched. Hisham Zain al-Abdin, director of forensic medicine for Khartoum state, reported that forensic teams identified at least 15 victims, most shot in the head, with some having injuries indicating they may have been thrown into the well alive.
Additional corpses have been uncovered, abandoned along roadsides and hidden in basements in the Sharg Elnil district. Some victims were found bound, suggesting the possibility of executions, according to Zain al-Abdin. He commented, “There were horrifying scenes here.”
As the civil war in Sudan approaches the two-year mark, government forces have made advances in regions long held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Authorities assert they are discovering significant evidence of killings in the former strongholds of the RSF, which separated from the military in April 2023.
The RSF has not yet issued a statement regarding these findings. Previously, it has denied widespread allegations of human rights violations in areas under its control, claiming accountability for individual offenders. The paramilitary group has accused the army of committing similar atrocities, a claim the military has refuted.
Hussein Al-Faki, a local resident who reported the bodies, described the civilians’ attempts to bury the victims, which were thwarted by warnings from RSF fighters occupying the area.
