The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana concluded with calls to strengthen the Catholic identity in schools. It featured discussions on collaborative efforts in education, recommendations for strategic frameworks, and enhancements to religious presence in schools.
The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana concluded with a significant appeal for educational leaders to enhance the Catholic identity within their institutions. Held from March 10 to 15, under the theme “Catholic Education for Integral Development: Shaping a Resilient and Inclusive Ghana,” the forum was organized by the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua. The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) articulated that effective education necessitates joint effort and clearly defined roles among stakeholders.
Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani presented several recommendations at the conclusion of the forum. He advocated for collaboration with key entities such as the Christian Council of Ghana and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana to review a draft Memorandum of Understanding concerning the management of Mission/Unit schools, aiming for its government’s endorsement to commence implementation in the 2025/2026 academic year.
Additionally, the Bishop proposed the establishment of a committee under the GCBC to create a five-year national strategic framework for Catholic education, with an aim for completion by the end of July 2025. He further emphasized the imperative of cultivating the Catholic identity in schools through the teaching of core doctrines, the construction of chapels, and the enhancement of priests’ and consecrated persons’ presence in educational settings.
The Second National Catholic Education Forum highlighted the urgent need to reinforce the Catholic identity in educational institutions throughout Ghana. It emphasized collaborative efforts, strategic planning for the future, and active participation of various religious organizations in refining the management of mission schools. These initiatives aim to foster a resilient and inclusive educational environment aligned with Catholic values.
