The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has urged both state and federal governments to implement advanced technology to enhance intelligence gathering and address security issues in Nigeria. This call was made in a communiqué following their First Plenary Assembly, emphasizing the need for improved remuneration for security personnel to boost motivation and effectiveness in safeguarding lives and property.
In their statement, signed by Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, the Bishops stressed the importance of equipping security forces adequately and committing to prosecuting crime impartially. They also highlighted the necessity of creating job opportunities by investing in agriculture, which would engage the youth and support sustainable food production while alleviating food costs across the country.
The Bishops advocated for collective efforts towards national integration and unity, encouraging political, religious, and traditional leaders to foster a spirit of cohesion among citizens. They criticized the closure of schools during Ramadan in various states, urging governments to reverse such policies to uphold children’s education rights within Nigeria’s diverse religious framework.
They called upon Nigerians to overcome frustrations from the 2023 elections and actively participate in future polls to drive change. Furthermore, the CBCN stressed the importance of strengthening electoral laws and ensuring transparency in institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission to enhance trust in the electoral process.
While addressing challenges, the Bishops acknowledged the government for various initiatives, including improvements in the Petroleum Industry, infrastructure rehabilitation, and the introduction of a student loan scheme, along with other financial reforms such as the new minimum wage and tax proposals.
