In a determined effort to combat fuel smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted 916 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Adamawa State, valued at approximately ₦22.9 million. This operation was carried out by the strategic enforcement unit, Operation Whirlwind, and the details were shared during a press conference on March 14, 2025.
The operation targeted notorious smuggling areas in Maiha, Mubi, Gurin, and Belel, resulting in the confiscation of 22,900 litres of PMS, with each keg containing 25 litres. Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs and National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Hussein Ejibunu, highlighted the operation’s intelligence-driven approach and its successful execution, reflecting the NCS’s commitment to maintaining the nation’s economic integrity.
This action follows another significant seizure of 1,149 jerrycans of PMS in Gembu, Taraba State, totaling 34,470 litres on March 13, 2025. Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi and his executive team confirmed this interception, emphasizing the NCS’s ongoing efforts to diminish illicit fuel trafficking, which threatens Nigeria’s economic stability.
Ejibunu identified key motivations behind PMS smuggling, including economic disparities and the temptation of quick profits. Nevertheless, under Adeniyi’s leadership, the NCS is determined to dismantle these illegal operations, aiming to render smuggling both unprofitable and risky.
Ejibunu expressed gratitude to the operatives for their courage and professionalism, stating, “I extend my profound appreciation to the officers and men of Operation Whirlwind for their courage, unyielding vigilance, and professional execution. Your dedication reinforces public confidence in our capacity to safeguard Nigeria’s economic sovereignty.” He encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to Customs, reinforcing the collective duty to combat economic subversion.
The Nigeria Customs Service’s recent operation has led to the significant seizure of illicit fuel, demonstrating its commitment to combating fuel smuggling and protecting the nation’s economy. The intelligence-driven approach of Operation Whirlwind showcases the effectiveness of strategic enforcement in addressing this critical issue. With ongoing vigilance and public cooperation, the NCS aims to eradicate these illegal activities and ensure economic stability for Nigeria.
