A parliamentary delegation from Morocco engaged in discussions in Mexico City with various Mexican officials to enhance cooperation on parliamentary matters of mutual interest. This meeting occurred on Saturday amidst the Moroccan parliamentarians’ attendance at the World Conference of Women Parliamentarians organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Mexico City.
The Moroccan delegation comprised four Members of Parliament: Laila Ahl Sidi Mouloud of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), Nadia Benzedfa of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), Aicha El Karji from the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), and adviser Hind El Ghazali from the RNI. Their participation allowed them to share insights on promoting women’s representation within legislative frameworks and political institutions.
During the meetings, the delegation highlighted the importance of parliamentary dialogue in fortifying legislative partnerships and advancing shared interests. They held talks with Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Martha Elena Patricio, Chairwoman of the Gender Equality Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, focusing on women’s presence in legislative roles.
Further discussions with MP Cynthia López Castro, head of the Office of Women Parliamentarians, and MP Anahí González Hernández revolved around strategies to enhance women’s representation in legislative bodies while sharing experiences concerning laws and initiatives that advocate for women’s political participation.
The Moroccan delegation underscored significant reforms in Morocco, such as the constitutional inclusion of gender parity in Article 19, and noted the substantial role women play in the current government, occupying seven out of 23 ministerial positions. Moreover, they acknowledged Mexico’s advancements, notably following Claudia Sheinbaum’s election as the first female president and strides towards gender parity in the Federal Congress and local administrations.
Additionally, the discussions covered crucial topics like renewable energy and the migration challenges faced by both nations, given their prominent positions as transit points for migrants.
