Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed his support for the recent peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing Iran’s dedication to fostering regional peace and stability. In discussions with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Pezeshkian provided congratulations to both nations on this significant milestone.
In his remarks, Pezeshkian stated, “Iran has always welcomed the establishment of peace, convergence and stability in the region,” stressing the importance of maintaining the territorial integrity of all nations involved. Following the peace agreement finalized last Thursday, Armenia acknowledged the cessation of its claims to the disputed territory of Karabakh.
The region has been a focal point of conflict, witnessing two major wars in recent decades. Despite its previously disputed status, Karabakh is recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan, which regained control through military action recently.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei described the treaty as “a necessary and important step” towards achieving lasting peace in the area. During the phone call, Pezeshkian highlighted the strong ties between Iran and Armenia and urged their officials to expedite the implementation of their bilateral agreements.
