Iran Denies Support for Houthi Rebels Amid U.S. Airstrikes

Iran has denied aiding Yemen’s Houthi rebels following U.S. airstrikes on Sanaa led by President Trump, who vowed to use “overwhelming lethal force”. The strikes resulted in numerous casualties, highlighting the tensions surrounding maritime security and Iranian influence in the region.

On March 15, 2025, President Donald Trump ordered a series of airstrikes against Houthi-held territories in Yemen, emphasizing the need for combat against Iranian-backed rebels disrupting maritime shipping in critical routes. He affirmed a commitment to employ “overwhelming lethal force” until these hostilities ceased.

In consequence, images from Yemeni television displayed smoke rising over the capital city, Sanaa. The U.S. Navy also released footage of aircraft launching from the USS Harry S. Truman before the strikes were executed.

Iran, in response to the airstrikes, reiterated its denial of any involvement with the Houthi rebels. The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for an end to U.S. operations while asserting that Iran’s foreign policy cannot be dictated by Washington.

The Houthi Health Ministry reported that the strikes resulted in significant casualties, claiming at least 31 fatalities, including women and children, with over 100 injured. They reported that particular strikes impacted residential areas in Saada province, yielding tragic outcomes.

Historically, the Houthis have targeted vessels in the Red Sea and have engaged in missile assaults on Israel, justifying their actions as support for Palestinians amidst conflict with Hamas. However, they had paused attacks following a ceasefire that initiated in January 2025.

The recent U.S. airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen underscore the escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, particularly regarding Iranian influence in the region. Iran’s denials of support for the Houthis highlight ongoing disputes about its military engagements. These developments, coupled with the humanitarian implications of the strikes, mark a significant chapter in the complex geopolitical landscape of Yemen.
