The G7 has rebuked Venezuela for unlawful naval incursions into Guyana’s EEZ, asserting these actions violate Guyana’s sovereignty. After a meeting in Quebec, the G7 emphasized the need for Venezuela to cease its aggressive conduct and addressed the political crisis in Venezuela. Guyana is pursuing legal action through the ICJ regarding its territorial claims.
The Group of Seven (G7) nations have condemned Venezuela for its recurrent naval incursions into Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), labeling these actions as “unacceptable” and a breach of Guyana’s sovereign rights recognized under international law. A joint statement was issued after a meeting held in Quebec, Canada, by the foreign ministers from G7 countries and the European Union, reaffirming support for Guyana and urging Venezuela to halt its aggressive conduct, particularly referencing a naval incident on March 1 involving a Venezuelan vessel near ExxonMobil’s oil production site in the Stabroek Block.
The G7 emphasized that actions threatening Guyana’s commercial vessels represent a violation of its sovereign rights. They highlighted their commitment to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations as an enduring principle. Tensions have risen between Venezuela and Guyana, especially following Venezuela’s announcement of scheduled elections for a governor in Guyana’s Essequibo region on May 25, 2025. This proposal has been met with strong opposition from Guyana, which deems it an illegal attempt to annex its territory, prompting them to seek intervention from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prevent any disruptive actions regarding Essequibo.
Additionally, Venezuela’s ongoing internal political crisis has drawn criticism from the G7, which has called for the restoration of democratic processes, the liberation of political prisoners, and an end to the suppression of peaceful dissent after the controversial elections held on July 28, 2024. As Guyana reinforces its diplomatic and legal strategies, regional and international actors are closely observing Venezuela’s actions. The ICJ is currently reviewing the longstanding border disputes and is anticipated to play a significant role in resolving this territorial conflict.
The G7’s condemnation of Venezuela’s actions highlights the increasing concerns regarding the maritime sovereignty of Guyana and the political unrest in Venezuela. As diplomatic and legal measures are strengthened by Guyana, the situation remains critical, with the ICJ set to play a pivotal role in determining the future of the contested Essequibo region amid international scrutiny.
