Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar held discussions in Iraq regarding oil, electricity, and gas collaboration. Key outcomes included an agreement to double electricity exports to Iraq and discussions on gas imports. Meetings were held with Iraqi leaders to strengthen investments in the energy sector.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar engaged in high-level discussions in Iraq regarding collaboration in the oil, electricity, and gas sectors, as well as enhancing bilateral trade. These discussions took place in Baghdad on March 16, where he met with Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. According to an official statement from the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, the meeting focused on advancing existing partnerships in the energy sector.

One of the key outcomes of the discussions was an agreement to double the electricity supply that Türkiye will provide to Iraq. The talks also included discussions on the potential import of gas from Türkiye to support Iraq’s power plants, highlighting aims to strengthen cooperation in that realm.

Additionally, the parties deliberated on encouraging Turkish companies to invest in Iraq’s oil and gas sector, assuring the necessary infrastructures would be provided to facilitate this investment. Bayraktar’s visit was notably timed, following the U.S. decision to revoke a sanctions waiver which permitted Iraq to purchase electricity from Iran.

In Baghdad, Bayraktar also met with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani where they assessed opportunities for enhancing cooperation in energy and contributing to regional energy security. He expressed commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between Türkiye and Iraq.

Bayraktar’s engagements extended to meetings with Deputy Prime Minister and Oil Minister Hayyan Abdulgani, as well as Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadhil. His agenda further included a visit to Erbil, where he consulted with Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). In this meeting, they discussed strategies for advancing oil and electricity trade and fostering collaborative efforts with public and private entities in the hydrocarbon sector.

Minister Alparslan Bayraktar’s recent meetings in Iraq aimed to fortify cooperation in the energy sector, particularly in electricity and gas. Agreements included doubling electricity provisions and discussing gas imports to support Iraq’s energy needs. Continuing dialogue with various Iraqi leaders, Bayraktar emphasized the necessity for Turkish investments in oil and gas, underlining a strategic partnership that seeks to enhance regional energy security.
