Recent reports indicate that President Donald Trump’s administration may implement new travel limits affecting 43 countries, classified into three color-coded categories: Red, Orange, and Yellow, based on restriction intensity. Cambodia is reportedly categorized as one of 21 nations on the Yellow list, which indicates the least stringent requirements.
The Red category, which will face the most severe impacts, includes 11 nations such as Afghanistan, Iran, and Venezuela, which will be entirely prohibited from entering the US. The Orange category also consists of 11 nations subjected to significant visa restrictions, including Belarus and Myanmar.
Nations listed under Yellow, including Cambodia, must address US concerns within 60 days to avoid being downgraded to a more severe category. Although specific details about these concerns remain undisclosed, they are likely related to the deportation of Cambodians with US convictions.
Chum Sounry, spokesperson for the Cambodian foreign ministry, stated that no formal notification has been received regarding the new restrictions yet and that the ministry is actively seeking further information. He emphasized that Cambodia has consistently collaborated with US officials to facilitate the repatriation of nationals facing deportation.
Chum Sounry remarked on the positive relationship between the two nations, indicating, “In this spirit, the foreign ministry, the Ministry of Interior and the Cambodian embassy to the US have all been working closely with US authorities.” Currently, they do not foresee any significant barriers to the repatriation process. He expressed confidence that Cambodia’s cooperation would be favorably regarded, given the nations’ strong bilateral relations.
As of November 2024, there were reported to be 1,747 Cambodians awaiting deportation according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
