The exhibition’s opening ceremony was attended by Aleksey Malenko, the Consul General of Russia in Cape Town, who expressed the event’s significance in promoting cultural exchanges between South Africa and Russia.

During the opening, Consul General Malenko emphasized that the exhibition reflects a strong interest in South Africa and reinforces the cultural ties between the nations. He highlighted that both countries are partners in BRICS, collaborating towards shared sustainable development goals. “BRICS is not purely a political and economic group, it is also a bridge for cultural exchange, which plays a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding,” he articulated.

The exhibition, organized by Independent Media, Independent Online (IOL), along with the TV BRICS partner African News Agency (ANA) and supported by Sputnik News Agency, underscores the vital role of photojournalism globally. Iqbal Surve, Chairman of Independent Media, remarked at the event that photojournalism plays an essential role in storytelling, saying, “A picture tells a thousand words. […] There’s always different sides to a story, but the one thing that always brings us together in a way is photographs.”

The Andrey Stenin International Press Photo Contest is an annual event open to young photojournalists aged 18 to 33. This exhibition of winners has traveled to numerous countries, including China, Egypt, Uruguay, Argentina, and Colombia, demonstrating its global reach. The Cape Town exhibition will remain open until March 16, showcasing the impactful works of emerging talents in photojournalism.
