Rwanda Signs Defense Cooperation Agreement with Ethiopia

Ethiopia and Rwanda have signed a defense cooperation agreement, focusing on collaboration in military sectors such as counterterrorism and training. Major General Teshome Gemechu highlighted the historical ties between the countries, while Brigadier General Patrick Karuretwa noted Ethiopia’s consistent support for Rwanda. This agreement signifies Ethiopia’s active pursuit of military partnerships with several nations, including previous collaborations with Kenya, Qatar, South Sudan, and the UAE.

On Thursday, a defense cooperation agreement was signed by Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, Chief of General Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, and Lieutenant General Mubarak Muganga, Army Chief of Staff of Rwanda. This collaboration is designed to enhance military cooperation across multiple sectors between Ethiopia and Rwanda, following discussions during Lt. Gen. Muganga’s official visit to Ethiopia.

Major General Teshome Gemechu, Director General of External Relations and Military Cooperation at the ENDF, emphasized the historical military collaboration between Ethiopia and Rwanda, stating that the new agreement aims to further solidify this partnership. The agreement encompasses cooperation in counterterrorism, military training, and capacity building programs.

Brigadier General Patrick Karuretwa of the Rwanda Defense Force underscored the long-standing and robust relationship, commending Ethiopia for its consistent support to Rwanda in times of need. He reaffirmed Rwanda’s dedication to strengthening military ties with Ethiopia through this agreement.

Ethiopia has consequently become a nation that forges similar military agreements; in November 2022, a military collaboration agreement was signed with Kenya, which aimed to bolster military cooperation for enhanced security and stability. Besides, discussions are ongoing with Qatar to intensify military relations following a meeting at the 8th Doha International Maritime Defense Exhibition.

Further regional military collaborations include meetings held with South Africa’s Chief of Defense and an agreement signed with South Sudan following high-level discussions. Agreements have also been implemented with the United Arab Emirates, reflecting Ethiopia’s proactive approach to defense cooperation with multiple nations.

The recent defense cooperation agreement between Ethiopia and Rwanda underscores the strategic partnerships being forged in the region. This initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s broader efforts to strengthen military alliances with various nations, thus enhancing regional security and cooperation. The ongoing dialogue and agreements with several countries indicate a commitment to collaborative defense strategies, positioned to foster stability and mutual support.
