The IOM will provide 2,800 emergency kits to victims of Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique, where at least 14 deaths and significant injuries have been recorded. The cyclone impacted multiple provinces, leading to widespread destruction of homes, schools, and health centres, highlighting Mozambique’s vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather events.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has announced the distribution of 2,800 emergency kits to victims of Tropical Cyclone Jude in Zambézia and Nampula provinces of Mozambique. The distribution is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to assess needs and provide crucial assistance despite significant challenges faced on the ground.
Tropical Cyclone Jude impacted Mozambique on Monday, leading to at least 14 fatalities and 60 injuries, affecting over 100,410 individuals across several provinces including Tete, Manica, and Nampula, Niassa, and Cabo Delgado. The IOM’s emergency kits will include essential supplies such as mats, mosquito nets, blankets, and tarpaulins for the storm-affected population.
The government spokesperson, Inocêncio Impissa, reported that the number of destroyed health centres has escalated to 30. Current data reflects that 19,961 families have been affected, with a total of 20,244 homes either partially or fully damaged. Additionally, 59 schools, impacting 17,401 pupils and 264 teachers, experienced disruption, along with substantial agricultural losses across 1,262 areas.
The rainy season, lasting from October to April, poses ongoing risks as Mozambique has already faced cyclones Chido and Dikeledi within this timeframe. These previous cyclones influenced approximately 736,000 individuals and led to significant destruction of infrastructure. Between 2019 and 2023, extreme weather events resulted in at least 1,016 deaths and affected nearly 4.9 million people. Mozambique is recognized as one of the nations most vulnerable to climate change, enduring both severe floods and cyclones during rainy seasons, alongside extended droughts.
The IOM’s distribution of emergency kits is a critical response to the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique. The data indicates severe impacts on health infrastructure and domestic properties, extending the urgent need for aid. As Mozambique continues to battle the repercussions of climate change and natural disasters, it remains imperative for organizations to provide ongoing support to affected communities.
