Turo Darboe Donates 3,689 Bags of Sugar to Support Vulnerable Communities

Mr. Turo Darboe, via Vision Development Foundation, generously donated 3,689 bags of sugar to various groups including political parties and organizations in a move to support community empowerment and poverty relief, fostering unity during Ramadan.

On a recent occasion, Mr. Turo Darboe, through the Vision Development Foundation (VDF), generously donated approximately 3,689 bags of sugar, underscoring VDF’s commitment to alleviating poverty and empowering communities. This initiative aims to provide immediate relief, while demonstrating a long-term commitment to corporate social responsibility. The sugar donation, consisting of 10 kg bags, was distributed to various stakeholders, including political parties, organizations, and individuals, alongside Village Development Committees and National Assembly Members.

The National People’s Party (NPP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP) each received 300 bags of sugar, while other political parties and wards received 200 and 150 bags, respectively. Additional contributions included 200 bags to the Christian Council, 171 to the National Assembly, and 100 bags designated for individuals with disabilities. Mr. Darboe, who has historically supported vulnerable populations during important occasions such as Ramadan and Tobaski, recently returned from a six-month health-related absence abroad.

Mr. Saihou Fofana, the Public Relations Officer of VDF, praised Mr. Darboe’s humanitarian efforts, emphasizing that this distribution aims to benefit communities throughout the month. The bags were allocated to political parties for them to distribute to underprivileged individuals. Fofana stated, “We believe that these people would more easily access the sugar through their political party.”

In expressing gratitude, Karafa Sonko, a representative of the UDP, acknowledged the impact of this support on the Muslim community during Ramadan, highlighting the unity fostered by the collaborative efforts of political parties. Sonko remarked, “The VDF could have called only one or two political parties to benefit from this gesture, but instead, they promoted inclusivity, which is commendable.”

Similarly, Lamin Saho from the NPP conveyed appreciation for VDF’s generosity, assuring that the sugar would reach underprivileged communities within the Kanifing Municipality and beyond. Honorable Samba Jallow, representing the National Reconciliation Party, echoed these sentiments, recalling previous similar donations made to provincial National Assembly members and praising this initiative for fostering unity among parties.

Ismaila Jallow, councilor for Suba Ward and deputy chairperson of Brikama Area Council, noted the significance of the donation in addressing urgent needs. He stated, “We received many requests from our people for sugar, rice, and oil, and this gesture from VDF came at the right time.”

In summary, Turo Darboe’s donation of 3,689 bags of sugar through the Vision Development Foundation highlights a significant commitment to communal support and poverty alleviation. By distributing these essentials to various political parties and organizations, the foundation fosters unity and inclusivity among Gambians, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
