PM Modi Reinforces Support for Mauritius in Chagos Islands Negotiation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged India’s support for Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos Islands during a state visit. He emphasized commitment to enhancing cooperation, particularly regarding maritime security in light of Chinese influence. Modi was honored with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, marking a significant diplomatic relationship. Furthermore, discussions regarding future agreements between Mauritius and Britain highlight ongoing geopolitical negotiations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed India’s support for Mauritius’ sovereignty regarding the Chagos Islands. This announcement aligns with Mauritius’ recent calls for a fresh deal concerning the Chagos Archipelago, which currently accommodates a US and UK military base. Negotiations are progressing towards a formal treaty intended to resolve a longstanding dispute between London and Port Louis.

During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, PM Modi stated, “In the context of Chagos, we fully respect the sovereignty of Mauritius.” He emphasized that the security and openness of the Indian Ocean is a mutual priority amid growing Chinese influence in the region.

PM Modi indicated that India and Mauritius plan to enhance their collaboration through several platforms, including the Colombo Security Conclave, the Indian Ocean Rim Association, and the Indian Ocean Conference. He has returned to Delhi following a two-day state visit to Mauritius.

Highlighting the bilateral relationship, PM Modi expressed pride in being a trusted partner in Mauritius’ development and the commitment to supporting the Global South. As part of his visit, Modi attended the National Day celebrations on March 12, 2025, serving again as the chief guest for the occasion, having first performed this role in 2015.

In a significant gesture, PM Modi was bestowed with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, becoming the first Indian to receive this prestigious honor. Earlier, former President Trump voiced support for a potential agreement between Mauritius and Britain concerning the future of the US-British military base on the Chagos Archipelago, which has been operational on Diego Garcia since the 1970s.

In summary, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Mauritius reaffirms India’s dedication to supporting Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos Islands amid recent calls for a re-negotiation with the UK. Strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation through various security platforms, alongside honoring Modi with the highest award from Mauritius, underscores the significance of their partnership. The ongoing discussions regarding the future of the Chagos Archipelago further highlight the geopolitical interests in the Indian Ocean region.
