Darfur Governor Arcua Minnawi reported a RSF attack resulting in over 20 civilian deaths in Al-Fashir, labeling it a “horrific massacre.” The Sudan Doctors Network confirmed the casualties and called for global intervention. The conflict has intensified in Al-Fashir, amid rising humanitarian crises affecting millions.
In a tragic development, Darfur Governor Arcua Minnawi reported that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group has killed at least 20 civilians and injured several others during an assault in Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur State. The governor characterized the attack as a “horrific massacre” aimed at civilians, urging the international community to take action to safeguard the populace.
The Sudan Doctors Network, a local non-governmental organization, corroborated the numbers by reporting 21 fatalities and 13 injuries from the RSF attack, emphasizing the need for urgent global intervention to cease the ongoing violence in Sudan. In a disturbing continuation of hostilities, the Zamzam refugee camp, one of the predominant camps in Darfur, also came under attack from RSF artillery, which follows an earlier shelling that left eight dead and 13 injured.
The Zamzam camp is currently facing a humanitarian crisis, heightened by a famine declaration issued by UNICEF in August. Both Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the United Nations have reproached the earlier artillery strike, underscoring the pressing humanitarian concerns in the region. The RSF has not issued any comments regarding the allegations made against them.
Since May 10, Al-Fashir has witnessed violent clashes between the Sudanese army and RSF militia, despite international warnings about the humanitarian implications for the region. Since April 2023, the conflict has led to over 20,000 fatalities and displaced more than 14 million individuals, raising alarm among local and international agencies about the escalating crisis in Sudan.
The recent attack by the RSF in Al-Fashir has raised alarm regarding the persistent violence against civilians in Darfur. With the death toll rising and humanitarian conditions deteriorating, there is an urgent call for international intervention. The situation calls for immediate attention to protect civilians and address the humanitarian crises exacerbated by ongoing conflicts.
