Kazakhstan aims to reduce its reliance on imported animal feed through a new initiative with Hungary’s UBM Group, which will construct three plants to produce premixes and compound feed. On March 12, 2023, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister, Serik Zhumangarin, held discussions with executives from Hungary’s UBM Group regarding the development of three production plants in Kazakhstan. These facilities are projected to generate 48,000 tons of premixes and 300,000 tons of compound feed annually, contributing significantly to local agricultural needs. Additionally, the project encompasses the establishment of a laboratory and a training center to support the industry.
As stated by the Kazakh government’s press service, this initiative aims to mitigate Kazakhstan’s reliance on imported compound animal feed, which stands at over 250,000 tons each year. Zhumangarin underscored the importance of providing local livestock farmers with access to high-quality, domestically produced feed, viewing this as crucial for reducing meat production costs. The Deputy Prime Minister also reaffirmed the nation’s objective of fulfilling at least 90% of its food demand with locally sourced products, particularly essential items.
UBM Group’s initiative will involve constructing facilities in the Kostanay and Karaganda regions, in addition to Almaty. In Karaganda, a business partner and construction site have already been chosen. Meanwhile, in Kostanay and Almaty, local collaborators are identified, but final decisions regarding construction locations remain undetermined.
To streamline project implementation, Zhumangarin instructed local authorities and the Ministry of Agriculture to secure land plots by the end of March. This will enable the investor to commence earthworks in the second quarter of this year, with the entire construction timeline estimated to be completed within two years.
Kazakhstan is taking strategic steps to decrease its dependence on imported feed by collaborating with UBM Group to establish local production facilities. This initiative not only aims to reduce the current reliance on feed imports but also seeks to ensure local farmers have access to quality resources.
