He conveyed that numerous chapels, schools, and pastoral centers have lost their roofs. “The destruction is very extensive. Around half of the mud houses in the 10 districts of the Diocese of Nacala were damaged,” the Bishop stated in communication with ACN.
The Bishop further categorized the cyclone’s impact as catastrophic, noting that wind speeds reached between 100 to 150 kilometers per hour, destroying several bridges and disrupting communications between key areas such as Nacala-a-Velha and Memba.
Repeated cyclonic activity poses a severe threat to the Diocese of Nacala, noted by the Bishop, who in January faced similar devastation from Cyclone Dikeledi. In response to recurrent emergencies, he proposed an initiative to acquire vital building materials for rehabilitation efforts in local chapels, schools, and community buildings.
