Zimbabwe Strengthens Ties with Russia to Pursue BRICS Membership

Zimbabwe is seeking to join the BRICS economic bloc to enhance trade and economic growth, as announced by Foreign Affairs Minister Professor Amon Murwira during discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. This initiative is driven by economic goals rather than political affiliations, and highlights collaboration in innovation and technology.

Zimbabwe is actively seeking to strengthen its ties with Russia in its quest to join the BRICS economic bloc. This strategic move is aimed at enhancing trade and stimulating economic growth, as articulated by Professor Amon Murwira, the country’s Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.

During the discussions on March 6, Professor Murwira highlighted that Zimbabwe’s interest in BRICS membership is primarily motivated by economic factors rather than political affiliations. He stated, “We discussed joining economic groupings, and one of the economic groupings is BRICS, which is basically made up of the Russian Federation, India, China, Brazil, South Africa, plus other countries that have recently joined.”

The Minister emphasized the need for Zimbabwe to engage in trade with other countries, remarking, “we believe that for Zimbabwe to grow, it needs to be in a grouping of countries that trade together because trade grows economies.” He noted that under the leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe is making significant steps toward joining BRICS as a means of promoting economic stability and growth.

Furthermore, Professor Murwira underscored the importance of collaboration with Russia and other nations, particularly in the realms of innovation, education, science, and technology as key drivers of economic progress. He stated, “we have coalesced around the idea of growing capabilities, and this comes through education, innovation, science, and technology.”

BRICS was originally established by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to propose an alternative economic structure to that of the United States and its Western allies.

In summary, Zimbabwe is pursuing membership in the BRICS economic bloc to bolster trade and economic growth, focusing on collaborative efforts with Russia and other partner nations. By emphasizing innovation and technology, Zimbabwe aims to enhance its economic capabilities and stability under the leadership of President Mnangagwa. The move reflects a broader strategy toward integrated economic cooperation beyond traditional Western alliances.
