Telkom Kenya Collaborates with Rakuten and Airspan to Advance Open RAN Technology

Telkom Kenya has partnered with Rakuten Symphony and Airspan Networks to develop Open RAN technology. The collaboration is supported by a KES 568 million grant from Japan and the United States, aiming to create a technological hub in Kenya. The partnership will enhance telecommunication innovation and training for local engineers while improving network performance and customer experience.

Telkom Kenya has embarked on a strategic partnership with Rakuten Symphony of Japan and Airspan Networks from the United States to advance Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) technology. This collaboration, which was announced recently, is supported by a KES 568 million ($4.4 million) technology grant from both the Japanese and U.S. governments.

The agreement seeks to position Kenya as a leading technological hub for telecommunications within Africa. The partnership will establish a testing facility dedicated to conducting field and network trials targeting advancements in 4G/5G technologies, Open RAN, and AI solutions that address connectivity challenges specific to Africa.

Open RAN distinguishes itself by promoting interoperability between hardware and software from diverse vendors, contrasting with traditional Closed RAN systems. This innovative architecture allows operators to potentially reduce both operational and capital expenditures while enhancing network performance.

Mugo Kibati, Chief Executive Officer of Telkom, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration, stating that it allows them to leverage the advantages of open architecture telecommunications and embrace future technological advancements such as AI.

The roles within this partnership are well-defined: Airspan will supply 4G and 5G radio units, while Rakuten will provide the Operating Support System platform and the necessary Open RAN software stack for network operation. Telkom Kenya’s involvement will center on contributing personnel and facilities to the project.

Glenn Laxdal, President and CEO of Airspan, noted the significance of innovation in this partnership, commenting that it positions Kenya at the forefront of technological development in Africa. This initiative showcases a proactive approach by Telkom, which not only aims to acquire RAN technology but also actively engages in its development and deployment.

Additionally, the partnership emphasizes knowledge transfer, focusing on the training and development of local engineers and developers. The funding for this initiative includes contributions of $3 million from the Japanese government and $1.4 million from the United States government, to be managed by Rakuten Symphony and Airspan Networks.

For Telkom customers, this technology is anticipated to enhance network performance significantly. Furthermore, Telkom expects the project to strengthen its research and development capabilities and improve its overall service offerings as part of a broader long-term transformation strategy.

Telkom Kenya’s collaboration with Rakuten Symphony and Airspan Networks marks a significant step towards establishing a robust telecommunications infrastructure through Open RAN technology. This initiative, backed by substantial financial support from the Japanese and U.S. governments, aims to enhance connectivity in Africa while fostering local talent. With a clear focus on innovation and knowledge transfer, Telkom is set to improve its service delivery and solidify its position as a technological leader in the region.
