Nairobi Coffee Auction Achieves Sh. 1.78 Billion Sales in Record Volume

The Nairobi Coffee Exchange auction generated Sh. 1.78 billion from 33,435 bags sold, showing a notable increase in volume and average price. Githembe factory led with the highest price, while Alliance Berries Ltd sold the most bags, indicating strong global demand for Kenyan coffee.

During the recent auction at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE), a total of 33,435 bags of coffee were traded, generating Sh. 1.78 billion. This volume marked a significant increase compared to the 18,874 bags sold in the previous auction. Additionally, the average price for a 50-kilo bag rose to Sh. 43,512, from Sh. 43,253 in the prior sale.

The Githembe coffee factory, affiliated with the Thiririka Farmers’ cooperative in Kiambu, achieved the highest price, selling 26 bags of grade AA coffee at Sh. 53,354 per bag through broker Alliance Berries Ltd. Other notable factories that fetched high prices in the auction included Guama at Sh. 52,577, Marumi at Sh. 47,656, and Irugu ini at Sh. 50,246.

The auction took place at Wakulima House in Nairobi, and several other factories like Ndaroini, Kevote, Kiruga, and Mitondo also reported strong performances. Premium grades AA and AB accounted for 26,716 bags, which represented 80 percent of the total volume traded, demonstrating robust demand for high-quality coffee.

Alliance Berries Ltd emerged as the leading agent, selling 15,973 bags worth Sh. 878.76 million. Other key contributors included Kirinyaga Slopes Company with 4,310 bags at Sh. 227.75 million and new KPCU, which sold 3,439 bags for Sh. 179.5 million. In total, 20 buyers participated, with C. Dormans being the top purchaser at 7,531 bags for Sh. 415.5 million.

Lisper Ndung’u, CEO of NCE, remarked on the auction’s impressive outcomes across various coffee grades highlighting the global demand for Kenyan coffee. She noted that the quantity of premium grades auctioned indicates healthy growth in the coffee market and affirmed that the total market value achieved reflects a strong trading climate and the dedication of farmers and stakeholders.

The latest auction at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange showcases a significant increase in both the volume and value of coffee traded, reaching Sh. 1.78 billion with a notable rise in average prices. The performance of various factories, particularly Githembe, reflects the strong demand for premium grades of coffee. NCE’s Chief Executive Officer emphasized the importance of quality and commitment among stakeholders, underscoring the favorable climate for Kenyan coffee in the global market.
