Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn stated, “We know that there are some sleepers here; we’ve put out a few already,” emphasizing that any Guyanese or others appointed in these elections would be prosecuted for treason.
Concerns were further heightened as Guyana recently petitioned the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prevent Venezuela from conducting elections within the Essequibo region, due to the ongoing border dispute. The Guyanese Foreign Ministry noted that the planned Venezuelan elections, set for May 25, would include preparatory activities that might affect Guyana’s sovereignty and population.
Venezuela has attempted to assert claims over the Essequibo Region, encompassing parts of Guyana, using a controversial referendum to justify its actions. Venezuelan leadership, including President Nicolás Maduro, has announced plans for elections for a Governor and Legislative Council in this resource-rich territory, which constitutes approximately two-thirds of Guyana and is inhabited by around 125,000 citizens.
In the backdrop of the ongoing dispute, Guyana has deported 75 Venezuelans, including minors, after they were apprehended near the Essequibo Coast. The Guyana Police Force reported that these individuals were treated humanely and subsequently returned to Venezuela with the assistance of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard after failing to present themselves at the designated immigration entry points.
