Gambia’s Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara solicited support from Bangladesh for a genocide case against Myanmar concerning the Rohingya Muslims. On Wednesday, Gambian Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara discussed Gambia’s ongoing genocide case against Myanmar with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. Tangara expressed his assurance that the Gambian president is fully supportive of this endeavor, stating, “We want to put this issue back on the map.” He affirmed the commitment of Gambia and its people to this critical cause for the Rohingya Muslims.
In response, Professor Yunus expressed gratitude for Gambia’s dedication to advocating for the Rohingya, emphasizing the importance of international support for a successful outcome. He stated, “We want this case to succeed. We want your support. It is a big help for us.” Tangara acknowledged Yunus’s esteemed leadership and his potential to attract international cooperation, noting, “You are a household name in Gambia. Tangara conveyed his good wishes to Professor Yunus for his new role in Bangladesh’s Interim Government, wishing him success in his important mission. Yunus highlighted Bangladesh’s efforts in mobilizing humanitarian aid for the Rohingya, urging for continued assistance in Rakhine State to prevent further displacement.
The two leaders advocated for enhanced trade and cooperation between Gambia and Bangladesh, with Yunus offering assistance, stating, “Let us know how we can help you.” They also expressed satisfaction in signing an agreement to collaborate on United Nations peacekeeping operations and discussed the potential of microcredit in alleviating poverty and promoting peace in Africa.
The meeting also included the presence of Khalilur Rahman, the high representative of the chief adviser regarding Rohingya issues, and Lamiya Morshed, senior secretary overseeing the SDGs affairs of the Bangladesh government.
This meeting highlighted the strong commitment of both Gambia and Bangladesh towards addressing the plight of the Rohingya Muslims through collaborative diplomatic efforts.
