The Democratic Party of Kenya, under Justin Muturi, has issued a 30-day notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza alliance, citing untenable political situations. This move follows Muturi’s criticism of government actions after his son’s abduction. Despite backlash, Muturi remains defiant regarding his political stance and is reportedly prepared for any repercussions.
The Democratic Party of Kenya (DPK), led by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, has officially severed its ties with the Kenya Kwanza coalition. In a letter dated March 7, 2025, addressed to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition Secretariat, the party issued a 30-day notice citing political developments that have rendered their inclusion in the coalition untenable. This formal announcement was made by DPK Chairman Esau Kioni and Secretary-General Jacob Haji.
The letter indicates that DPK is invoking the Termination Clause (8) of the coalition agreement, making the withdrawal effective within one month. It stated, “Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza Coalition is no longer tenable due to the prevailing political developments.” This communication was also sent to the Registrar of Political Parties and led organizations within the coalition, including Ford Kenya and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Muturi’s decision to exit the coalition occurs amidst an increasing criticism of the government, particularly following his public disclosure regarding his son’s abduction. He has been outspoken about the issues of enforced disappearances in Kenya and the personal trauma caused by his son Leslie’s kidnapping in June 2024. “I have personally suffered as my son was abducted, leaving my family in turmoil,” he commented, underscoring the urgency and seriousness of his concerns.
Following this incident, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Muturi expressed his frustration over his lack of explanations regarding the ordeal. He noted that, despite being a member of the National Security Council at the time, he was not informed about his son’s whereabouts until Leslie was released by unknown individuals suspected to be security personnel. Muturi’s protests concerning this issue have led to criticism from allies of President William Ruto, claiming his allegations are politically motivated.
Senator Wahome Wamatinga accused Muturi of exploiting the situation to further his ambitions for the upcoming 2027 elections. Similarly, UDA MP Reuben Kiborek condemned Muturi’s public stance as unnecessary, suggesting that such discussions should occur within governmental frameworks rather than in public media. Critiques from opposition figures such as Saboti MP Caleb Amisi further emphasized the contradictions in Muturi’s public criticism given his role within the government.
Despite this criticism, Muturi has maintained an unwavering position, confidently stating, “I do not fear being sacked. I trust in God,” and reportedly submitted his resignation letter. He remains resolute in facing potential repercussions stemming from his departure from the coalition and his vocal discontent with government actions.
The Democratic Party of Kenya under Justin Muturi has decisively chosen to exit the Kenya Kwanza coalition, attributing the move to unbearable political circumstances. This action is compounded by Muturi’s vocal criticism of the government regarding his son’s abduction. The situation has generated significant political discourse, with various stakeholders expressing divergent views on Muturi’s motivations and the implications of his departure. Notably, Muturi appears undeterred, demonstrating resilience in the face of controversy and potential consequences.
