CS Justin Muturi Acknowledges Democratic Party’s Exit from Kenya Kwanza Coalition

CS Justin Muturi confirmed that the Democratic Party of Kenya has issued a formal notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, highlighting the party’s autonomy in decision-making processes. The 30-day notice, which had been submitted without his prior knowledge, has been acknowledged by the Registrar of Political Parties, indicating the party’s legal right to withdraw from the coalition as political dynamics shift.

The Public Service Cabinet Secretary, Justin Muturi, has confirmed that the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), which he is affiliated with, has issued a notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. Muturi emphasized that the party is free to make such decisions without needing to inform him. “The party doesn’t have to inform me these days about the activities that they are doing because they do the normal things,” he stated during an interview with Citizen TV.

On Wednesday, the Democratic Party submitted a 30-day notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, a decision confirmed by Registrar of Political Parties, Anne Nderitu. Muturi mentioned that he only learned of the letter after its submission, indicating that its approval does not hinge on his personal feelings. “I just saw the letter also; whether I am okay with it or not, it is a decision that has been made by an organ of the party that I believe it is authorized to make the decision,” he remarked.

Muturi joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition via the DP party in May 2022, following an agreement that recognized the DP as a constituent member. Earlier, he had been named the party leader, but he resigned from this position upon his nomination as Attorney General. The notice to exit the coalition cited that “our stay in Kenya Kwanza is no longer tenable due to prevailing political developments,” as signed by DP Secretary General, Dr. Jacob Haji, dated March 7.

According to the termination clause of the coalition agreement, the notice is effective immediately upon submission. Legally, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) cannot reject any political party’s decision to leave a coalition if a proper notice is provided. The letter has been addressed to the chairperson of Kenya Kwanza Coalition secretariat and was also copied to the secretaries general of Ford Kenya, UDA, and Maendeleo Chap Chap. Additionally, it was co-signed by DP Chairperson Esau Kioni.

In summary, CS Justin Muturi has communicated the Democratic Party of Kenya’s intent to withdraw from the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, asserting that the party is under no obligation to consult him before making such decisions. The 30-day notice was formally submitted and acknowledged by the relevant authority, reinforcing the party’s legal right to exit the coalition without contest. This development signifies a critical political shift within the Kenya Kwanza coalition amid evolving political circumstances.
