The EN1 National Road is severely damaged in Nampula due to tropical storm JUDE, with repairs to start imminently, although no completion date is available. Areas remain impassable, and emergency preparedness is in effect amid ongoing assessments of the cyclone’s impacts.
The National Road No. 1 (EN1) in Mozambique has experienced a significant disruption at the Anchilo Control Post due to severe tropical storm JUDE, causing extensive road damage. The repairs are set to commence on Tuesday; however, a timeline for their completion is currently unavailable.
Faquira Massalo, the Director of Public Works in Nampula, indicated that the damage is considerable, necessitating immediate action to restore traffic on the important highway. The road has suffered a cut measuring approximately 15 meters in length and up to 7 meters in depth, prompting the National Roads Administration (ANE) to assess the site alongside contractor engineers to develop a repair strategy involving the installation of washers to promote water flow.
Several areas within Nampula province remain impassable due to the storm’s impact, including the routes from Nametil to Angoche, Nampula to Liúpio, and multiple segments near the Naguema to Chocas-mar intersection. Anacleta Botão, the INGD delegate in Nampula, noted the absence of concrete data regarding the cyclone’s human toll due to limitations in surveying resources, which have only recently gained access to affected areas.
Despite this, Ms. Botão confirmed that emergency kits have been strategically placed in areas identified as likely to be impacted by the storm, demonstrating the preparedness of local authorities to assist affected populations.
The EN1 cut in Nampula represents a significant infrastructure challenge caused by severe weather, prompting immediate repair efforts by local authorities. While assessments continue to gauge the storm’s full impact, emergency preparedness measures are already in place to assist the affected communities.
