Guatemalan authorities have mandated the evacuation of at least 282 families near Volcano de Fuego due to heightened volcanic activity observed on Monday. The volcano, located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Guatemala City, has begun to emit significant columns of lava, ash, and rocks since Sunday night, creating a dense plume visible in the sky.
The eruption has led to volcanic ash rising to 7,000 meters above sea level, extending as far as 50 kilometers in various directions, as reported by the National Coordinating Agency for Disaster Reduction (Conred), which has issued an institutional orange alert. This alert supports ongoing communications with local officials to facilitate preventive measures and response efforts.
According to Conred, more than 900 individuals have been evacuated as a precaution against ash fall, with an estimated additional 30,000 residents potentially at risk. As a further safety measure, classes have been suspended in four municipalities affected by the volcanic activity.
Recognized as one of Guatemala’s three most active volcanoes, the Volcano de Fuego had previously remained inactive for 50 days before erupting over the weekend. This volcano stands at 3,763 meters in height and is known for its catastrophic eruption in June 2018, which resulted in over 400 fatalities.
