He is set to serve as the Chief Guest at the celebrations marking the National Day on March 12. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the significance of the trip, stating, “Strengthening India-Mauritius enduring ties! PM @narendramodi has embarked on a 2-day State visit to Port Louis, Mauritius.” During his visit, PM Modi will engage with Mauritian leaders to enhance bilateral partnerships focused on regional security and development.
In his statement prior to departure, PM Modi acknowledged Mauritius as a vital maritime neighbor and key partner, reinforcing their longstanding connections. He expressed enthusiasm about engaging with Mauritian leadership, aiming to elevate the robust friendship shared by both nations, encapsulated in the phrase, “We are connected by history, geography and culture.”
The Prime Minister articulated hope that this visit will build upon historical foundations and initiate a progressive chapter in the India-Mauritius relations. He referenced the two countries’ mutual commitment to democratic values and cultural diversity, with an emphasis on their people-to-people connections.
At the invitation of Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Modi will participate in Mauritius’ 57th National Day festivities, where Indian Defence Forces will be represented. His last visit occurred in 2015, and this trip includes meetings with the Mauritian President, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries, as well as interactions with the Indian-origin community.
During the visit, PM Modi will inaugurate the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre, both constructed with Indian grant assistance. Notably, various Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be established, enhancing cooperation in diverse sectors, reinforcing education, health, and maritime security.
The MEA highlighted the importance of the India-Mauritius relationship, stating, “India and Mauritius share a close and special relationship rooted in shared historical, cultural and people to people ties.” The visit aims to reaffirm these connections and amplify the commitment to bilateral collaboration.
Indian High Commissioner to Mauritius, Anurag Srivastava, characterized the relationship as robust and multifaceted, anticipating significant agreements in maritime security and capacity building from the forthcoming meetings between the Prime Ministers. He reiterated the strong and evolving partnerships across multiple sectors.
