This adjustment translates to a 33% rise in the fee, a measure originally instituted by the previous Mahama-led administration.
While addressing the public on X Space, Dr. Forson emphasized that the current amount of GH¢1.50 is insufficient, stating, “Unfortunately, we all agree that this amount is too small and can’t even buy one egg.” He indicated that the government plans to adjust the feeding cost and align it with inflation, suggesting significant improvement with the new rate.
The cost of meals has seen previous adjustments, starting from GH¢1 and being raised to GH¢1.20 under the previous government. In 2023, the Ghana School Feeding Programme served approximately 3,801,491 schoolchildren to enhance school enrollment, prevent hunger, and improve nutritional standards.
The Minister of Finance is set to present the 2025 budget to Parliament on March 11, 2025. This budget presentation is anticipated to further clarify the government’s plans to support the School Feeding Programme and its objectives, reinforcing its commitment to child nutrition.
