UAE-Backed Madhol Hospital to Enhance Healthcare Access in South Sudan

The Madhol Field Hospital, inaugurated by the UAE and South Sudan’s Ministry of Health, will provide essential healthcare services to approximately 2 million people, including Sudanese refugees. The facility will offer a range of medical services and serve as a referral center to enhance the regional healthcare network. The UAE remains committed to supporting healthcare development in South Sudan and globally, focusing on sustainable solutions.

The National Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), inaugurated the Madhol Field Hospital in Aweil East County, located in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State, approximately 64 kilometers from the Sudanese border. This facility, which boasts 100 beds, aims to provide emergency and intensive care as well as specialized treatment to around 2 million South Sudanese people, including 300,000 returnees, 15,000 internally displaced persons, and 20,000 refugees from Sudan.

Sultan Mohammed Al Shamsi, the UAE Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs for Development and International Organizations, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure in South Sudan. The Madhol Field Hospital will offer an array of medical services, such as general medicine, pediatrics, orthopedic services, surgery, emergency care, internal medicine, ENT services, radiology, and laboratory diagnostics. Additionally, it features outpatient clinics, a surgical theater, and a pharmacy, thereby significantly improving access to quality healthcare in the region.

Addressing the treatment of Sudanese refugees and local communities, Mr. Al Shamsi remarked on the importance of medical care in conflict-affected areas. The hospital is designed to cater to millions, providing essential services including maternal and child healthcare, management of malnutrition, and mental counseling. It is expected to alleviate pressure on existing facilities, allowing for better allocation of medical resources and fostering stability in the region.

The Madhol Field Hospital is equipped with specialized departments to treat a variety of conditions, including general medicine, pediatrics, orthopedic and general surgery, and emergency medicine. The provision of advanced diagnostic services such as radiology and laboratory testing will enhance treatment capabilities. Pivotal care units specifically for maternity and pediatrics will further contribute to improved health outcomes.

Additionally, the facility will function as a vital referral center, addressing limitations within local healthcare services. It aims to strengthen the healthcare network by offering specialized treatments and emergency interventions, assisting primary healthcare centers that often face resource constraints. This approach will ensure continuity of care and availability of life-saving treatments when necessary.

The UAE’s commitment to healthcare development extends beyond the Madhol Field Hospital. The nation is dedicated to enhancing global healthcare through investments in infrastructure, medical training, and distribution of medical supplies. Collaborative efforts with international organizations further amplify the impact of these initiatives in underserved communities, emphasizing sustainable healthcare solutions to bolster quality medical care worldwide.

The inauguration of the Madhol Field Hospital marks a significant advancement in healthcare access for communities in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State, particularly for the vulnerable populations affected by conflict and displacement. The hospital’s comprehensive services aim to provide quality healthcare, while its function as a referral center will integrate and strengthen the regional healthcare system. The UAE’s ongoing commitment to developing healthcare infrastructure in South Sudan reflects its broader vision for enhancing global health security and humanitarian support.
