The government intends to renovate and rename Sabata Secondary School in Trans Nzoia County after Wafula Chebukati, former IEBC Chair, following a request from MP Kakai Bisau. Plans include modern classrooms and establishing a digital center of excellence to enhance local employment opportunities.
The government has announced plans to renovate and rename Sabata Secondary School located in Trans Nzoia County, in memory of the late Wafula Chebukati, former Chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. This decision responds to a request made by Kiminini Legislator Kakai Bisau during Chebukati’s burial service. President William Ruto, who attended the ceremony, approved the initiative, accompanying it with plans for the construction of 15 modern classrooms.
Legislator Bisau emphasized the significance of naming the school after Wafula Chebukati, noting that he played a crucial role in announcing the 2022 presidential results. According to Bisau, Chebukati’s integrity and adherence to the law during a complex electoral period helped prevent potential conflicts in the nation. “Wafula Chebukati was no ordinary Kenyan… The announcement of the presidential results summed up the man he was,” he remarked, underlining the importance of commemorating Chebukati’s legacy through the school.
In addition to renovation and classroom construction, Sabata Secondary School has been identified as a digital centre of excellence, fulfilling Bisau’s vision. Recognizing Chebukati’s passion for information technology, he advocated for a digital hub that would provide local youth with digital opportunities, thereby enhancing unemployment solutions in the community. “Chebukati was an IT lover and enthusiast,” stated Bisau, expressing the hope that this initiative will align with the government’s economic transformation agenda.
The initiative to rename Sabata Secondary School in honor of Wafula Chebukati signifies recognition of his pivotal contributions during a crucial electoral period. The government plans not only to enhance the school’s infrastructure with modern classrooms but also to establish a digital hub promoting technological advancement in the region. This holistic approach aims to create job opportunities for local youth and solidify Chebukati’s legacy in the community.
