Qatar has called on the IAEA to oversee Israeli nuclear facilities and urged Israel to sign the NPT. The call, presented by Ambassador al-Hammadi at the UN atomic agency session, emphasizes international obligations to ensure Israel’s compliance with nuclear regulations. Qatar also criticized Israel’s military actions against Palestinians and submitted a memorandum to the ICJ regarding Israel’s obligations to UN operations in occupied territories.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally requested the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee all Israeli nuclear facilities, emphasizing the need for global regulation. During a session at the UN atomic agency, Ambassador Jassim Yacoub al-Hammadi urged Israel to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). He emphasized the international community’s obligation to enforce UN resolutions demanding that Israel subject its nuclear facilities to IAEA safeguards.
The Qatari statement highlighted the necessity for intensified international efforts to integrate Israel into the NPT as a non-nuclear entity. Notably, all Middle Eastern nations, except Israel, adhere to the NPT and maintain effective agreements with the IAEA. Israel’s nuclear arsenal is estimated to consist of 200 to 400 warheads, rendering it the only state in West Asia with non-conventional weaponry.
Hammadi further criticized Israel’s aggressive policies, including forced displacement of Palestinians, military actions in West Bank cities, humanitarian aid blockades in Gaza, and constraints on the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Recently, Qatar submitted a memorandum to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) requesting an advisory opinion concerning Israel’s obligations under a UN General Assembly resolution.
Hammadi’s remarks reiterated that Israel must permit UN agencies, particularly UNRWA, to function in occupied territories and safeguard UN properties and personnel. He called for the international community to take decisive action to ensure Israel complies with international resolutions, acknowledges Palestinians’ self-determination rights, and promotes stability in the West Asia region to mitigate further global risks.
Qatar’s appeal to the IAEA to oversee Israeli nuclear facilities underscores the nation’s commitment to nuclear non-proliferation. By urging Israel to join the NPT and reinforcing the necessity for UN operational freedom in occupied territories, Qatar aims to support Palestinian rights and compel Israel to adhere to international norms. The call for decisive action reflects a broader concern regarding regional stability and compliance with global regulations.
