Ukrainian Officials Set to Engage in Talks with US Counterparts in Saudi Arabia

Four Ukrainian officials will meet American counterparts in Saudi Arabia to discuss minerals and improve relations following tensions with Washington. Notable participants include Andrii Yermak and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, with discussions scheduled for 12 March.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that four officials will travel to Saudi Arabia to engage with their American counterparts. This delegation includes Andrii Yermak, the Head of the President’s Office, along with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Yuliia Svyrydenko—the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy—and Pavlo Palisa, Deputy Head of the President’s Office.

The crux of the discussions will focus on a potential agreement concerning minerals and fostering better relations with Washington, particularly following the contentious prior meeting between Presidents Zelenskyy and Donald Trump.

President Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, on Monday, 10 March. Following that, the Ukrainian officials, including Yermak, Sybiha, Defence Minister Rustem Umierov, and Palisa, will remain in Saudi Arabia for discussions with the American delegation.

In a statement addressing the forthcoming talks, President Zelenskyy remarked, “On our side, we are fully committed to constructive dialogue, and we hope to discuss and agree on the necessary decisions and steps. Ukraine has been seeking peace from the very first second of this war. Realistic proposals are on the table. The key is to move quickly and effectively.”

The talks between Ukrainian and US delegations regarding the Russo-Ukrainian war will commence next week in Saudi Arabia. According to an anonymous Ukrainian official speaking to AFP, Yermak is slated to lead the delegation, which may be joined by Defence Minister Umierov. Media sources indicate that the US representatives will include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. Notably, American news outlet Axios has reported that these discussions are set for Wednesday, 12 March.

In summary, a delegation of four Ukrainian officials is preparing for crucial discussions in Saudi Arabia with American representatives. The agenda includes pivotal talks on minerals and diplomatic relations, following prior tensions with Washington. President Zelenskyy’s commitment to dialogue underscores Ukraine’s ongoing pursuit of peace amidst the ongoing war. The expected participation of high-level US officials signifies the importance of these negotiations.
