On a recent Friday afternoon, a team of South Sudanese fighters departed from Juba en route to Thailand to represent their nation in the prestigious World Muay Thai Championship. This tournament, which commenced on March 4 and will continue until March 18, includes participants from various countries such as Algeria, Russia, the Netherlands, Canada, Italy, France, Iran, Brazil, Latvia, the Philippines, Spain, Thailand, Myanmar, India, and China.
The South Sudanese team consists of notable fighters: Abednego Thon, known as Wizzy; Sky Okony; and James Majok Gau. Upon departure from Juba International Airport, Puro Okello Oboo, the President of the South Sudan Kickboxing Federation, expressed confidence in his athletes’s readiness to succeed. He stated, “We are traveling to Thailand to represent South Sudan in the ongoing championship. The fighters are prepared and will bring good results.”
Wizzy conveyed his appreciation for the opportunity to represent South Sudan at this international event, affirming, “We are happy to represent South Sudan. We are hopeful that we will bring home a trophy as a sign of unity.” Likewise, Okony highlighted the significance of Muay Thai in fostering social interactions, stating, “All eyes of the South Sudanese are on us. We will do our best to make this country proud.”
