Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, HE Sheikha Alya, participated in a meeting at UN HQ focused on securing major sporting events, marking the UNOCT’s fifth anniversary. She emphasized Qatar’s efforts in combating terrorism through the Global Sports Programme and praised the comprehensive security measures implemented during the FIFA World Cup 2022 to ensure attendee safety. Qatar showcased its expertise in organizing secure sporting events at the United Nations Headquarters during a meeting coordinated by the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism in collaboration with the French Permanent Mission to the UN. This event was entitled “Securing the Legacy: Debriefing from Paris 2024 for Future Major Sporting Events” and commemorated the fifth anniversary of the UNOCT Global Sports Programme.
In her inaugural speech, HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, underscored Qatar’s innovative contributions to the Global Sports Programme aimed at combating terrorism. She highlighted Qatar’s exemplary hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2022, where the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy employed thorough security measures to ensure the safety of both athletes and spectators, establishing a global benchmark for sports security.
A significant portion of the meeting featured insights from Lt Col Ali Mohammed al-Ali, Director of the Arab and International Police Communication Department at the Ministry of Interior. He elucidated the security measures and preventive steps taken by the Safety and Security Operations Committee (SSOC) during the planning phase of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
These included initial recommendations during the stadium design process to ensure that safety and security standards were of the highest caliber, thereby guaranteeing attendee safety. Lt Col al-Ali reiterated the SSOC’s commitment to sharing its experiences with nations preparing for major sporting events and reaffirmed Qatar’s dedication to enhancing safety systems in accordance with Qatar National Vision 2030.
