On Saturday, the Iraqi government confirmed the lack of any official notification regarding the cancellation of its exemption for purchasing Iranian gas, a privilege previously granted by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Government spokesperson Basim Al-Awadi stated that ongoing dialogue and communication between Baghdad and Washington highlight the importance of Iraq’s stability for the broader region.
In February, President Trump revoked Iraq’s waiver to import electricity and gas from Iran due to new sanctions imposed on Tehran. Reports indicated that the exemption is expected to expire on March 7, raising concerns regarding Iraq’s energy security and future energy planning.

Additionally, the Ministry of Oil has commenced constructing its own pipelines. Al-Awadi emphasized that Iraq intends to enhance its energy security through diversified investments. The strategy encompasses developing steam and combined-cycle power plants alongside investments in renewable energy, including solar power and waste-to-energy projects.
