Mansour Lawal, brother of deceased Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, has called for justice regarding his brother’s death in Uganda. Initial reports suggested an accident, but further details indicated a fall from a balcony. Both Nigerian and Ugandan officials have committed to investigating the incident comprehensively.
Mansour Lawal, the elder brother of the late Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, has called for justice concerning his brother’s untimely death in Uganda. He has urged both the Nigerian and Ugandan governments to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, as reported by The PUNCH.
Lawal’s death was announced by his football team and the Ugandan Police on February 24, with initial assessments indicating a motorcycle accident. However, subsequent reports suggested that he fell from a balcony of a shopping mall in Kampala whilst visiting a Tanzanian acquaintance. The 29-year-old was laid to rest in Sokoto on February 25, receiving tributes from his club Vipers SC and their supporters.
In a video shared by his club, Mansour expressed his gratitude for the assistance received during this tragic time. He stated, “I am also urging the Nigerian government and the Ugandan government to please work with the Nigerian embassy to ensure justice prevails.” He extended his appreciation to teammates, fans, and the Nigerian government for their support in returning Abubakar’s remains home.
The investigation into Lawal’s death is currently ongoing, with Ugandan authorities delving into the details. The Nigerian Government, represented by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and the Nigerian High Commission in Uganda, has pledged to ensure a thorough inquiry into the matter. Preliminary information revealed that Lawal arrived at the mall to meet his friend, who had left him in their room shortly before the fall.
Nigerian Embassy officials, led by Ambassador Shama Shanga, have taken immediate action, engaging with the authorities to advocate for a comprehensive investigation. Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of NiDCOM, emphasized the need for transparency, stating, “This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover-up at all.” Abubakar Lawal’s football career included stints with Wikki Tourists, Nasarawa United, and a successful tenure with Vipers SC in Uganda.
The tragic death of Abubakar Lawal has raised significant concerns regarding transparency and accountability. Calls for a thorough investigation from both family members and government officials underscore the necessity of uncovering the truth about the circumstances leading to his death. As investigations continue, the commitment from both Nigerian and Ugandan authorities to pursue justice remains paramount, ensuring that all necessary actions are taken to honor Lawal’s memory.
