Earlier this month, security forces aligned with President Salva Kiir apprehended two ministers and several senior military personnel supporting Machar. This development has prompted concerns regarding the stability of a 2018 peace agreement, which successfully concluded a civil war that incurred nearly 400,000 fatalities.
Yasmin Sooka, chairperson of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, has expressed that the situation reflects an alarming regression that threatens years of progress.
