The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission has confirmed a tariff reduction to US$0.22 per kWh for Jungle Energy Power customers in Nimba and Bong counties, marking a 12% decrease from US$0.25. A new monthly fixed charge of US$1.50 and a connection fee reduced to US$40.00 have also been implemented. This decision aims to improve energy access while ensuring transparency and accountability in service delivery.
In a pivotal ruling for Liberia’s electricity sector, the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has affirmed the electricity price at US$0.22 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for customers in the distribution areas managed by Jungle Energy Power (JEP) in Nimba and Bong counties. This decision, announced by the Acting Chairman Atty. Kla-Edward Toomey II in Gompa City, represents a 12% decrease from the earlier rate of US$0.25 per kWh, catering to both consumer interests and JEP’s financial viability.
Additionally, LERC has introduced a monthly fixed charge of US$1.50, designed to support the enhancement of network infrastructure and service delivery in the two counties. To ensure transparency in the use of this revenue, the Commission requires JEP to set up an escrow account, co-managed with LERC, to oversee the collection of these charges, along with monthly reporting to the Commission.
Furthermore, a new connection charge of US$40.00 has been approved for new customers connecting to JEP’s network, a significant decrease from the previous charge of $100.00. This fee covers the essential materials needed for the connection, including a single or three-phase energy meter and sufficient low-voltage cable. The altered tariffs will be effective from March 20, 2025, to March 19, 2028, with minor adjustments permitted as per the Multi-Year Tariff Methodology established in May 2021.
In response to this decision, JEP’s CEO, Tomah S. Floyd, Sr., indicated that the management is reviewing the ruling and considering appropriate reactions. He has expressed openness to discussions with stakeholders regarding these changes. The Development Officer of Bong County, Seidiki Kromah, commended the tariff reductions, emphasizing their positive impact on local livelihoods and overall service delivery.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister for Energy, Charles Umehai, reiterated the Liberian government’s commitment to ensuring a reliable, efficient, and affordable electricity supply. He emphasized the need for continued support for JEP to boost access and enhance its revenue base, recognizing JEP as a successful model for Liberian-owned businesses in electricity distribution. It is pertinent to note that a notice for reconsideration was filed by JEP in January 2025, following the tariff reduction approved by LERC.
