Aoun Declares Exclusive Government Authority Over Decision-Making in Lebanon

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun proclaimed that decision-making lies solely with the government, excluding political parties and sects. The cabinet approved the 2025 budget and discussed reforms. Aoun’s discussions with Saudi Arabia and at the Arab summit illustrated international support for Lebanon, albeit dependent on reforms.

In a significant announcement, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that the authority to make decisions in the nation will be solely retained by the government, excluding political parties and sects from influence. He emphasized that reforms are crucial for Lebanon’s stability, asserting that this need extends beyond international demands.

President Aoun’s remarks were made during the inaugural cabinet meeting at Baabda Palace following the government’s vote of confidence. The meeting addressed a comprehensive 25-item agenda, prioritizing urgent matters. Prior to this session, the president conducted discussions with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to review current affairs.

The cabinet granted approval for the 2025 budget by decree and assigned the finance minister the task of revising certain fees within a week. Moreover, a strategic plan to execute reforms was adopted based on established priorities for the nation’s advancement.

President Aoun provided an update on his recent trip to Saudi Arabia, where he met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He noted Riyadh’s readiness to support Lebanon, contingent upon the implementation of reforms, and requested easing of the travel ban on Saudi nationals visiting Lebanon, along with facilitation for Lebanese exports to the Kingdom. A follow-up visit is slated after Eid al-Fitr to ink bilateral agreements with several ministers.

Further, Aoun detailed his participation in an emergency Arab summit in Egypt, where he engaged with ten heads of state. He reported their conditional support for Lebanon, reliant on reforms, and their interest in visiting the country. He noted that King Abdullah II of Jordan has committed to providing political and military support, alongside backing from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas regarding Lebanon’s handling of Palestinian refugee camps.

Addressing appointments, President Aoun reiterated that the cabinet holds exclusive authority in that domain, urging ministers to uphold confidentiality and steer clear of political meddling. After the meeting, Prime Minister Salam announced that future meetings would take place in an independent location as per the Taif Agreement, with further specifics to be disclosed next week.

Foreign Minister Youssef Raji communicated that diplomatic appointments are currently under review, with a temporary extension offered to six ambassadors. Additionally, Information Minister Paul Morcos revealed tax exemptions for individuals impacted by the Israeli war, alongside the appointment of 63 specialized officers within the Internal Security Forces.

In conclusion, President Joseph Aoun has reaffirmed the government’s sole authority over decision-making in Lebanon while emphasizing the need for vital reforms. Key developments from the cabinet meeting addressed the 2025 budget, diplomatic relations, and security appointments, indicating a structured approach towards improving the nation’s stability. Aoun’s recent engagements with Saudi Arabia and participation in the Arab summit further highlight international interest in Lebanon’s reformative trajectory.
