The United Nations has called for accountability in the Central African Republic (CAR) following a series of human rights violations by armed groups. A joint report by the Human Rights Office and the UN mission, MINUSCA, emphasizes the urgency of addressing these violations to prevent future occurrences. Among the documented instances, at least 24 individuals were reportedly killed during attacks in October and January, including cases of summary executions.
The report highlights that armed groups, some linked to the country’s military, have perpetrated serious human rights abuses, particularly against Muslim communities and Sudanese refugees. Thameen Al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, revealed, “Armed groups…committed grave human rights violations,” detailing incidents of sexual violence, forced labor, and other cruel treatments.
Additionally, Al-Kheetan insisted that these crimes require punishment and reiterated the UN’s commitment to collaborating with local authorities to enhance human rights protections. Meanwhile, UN High Commissioner Volker Türk urged clarity about the connections between the WTA group and the army, advocating for transparency regarding the group’s actions and suggesting disarmament if necessary.
The CAR has faced prolonged instability, deeply rooted in ethnic and religious strife. Current UN assessments indicate that approximately one in five citizens are either internally displaced or have fled the country due to ongoing violence, which has also severely damaged infrastructure such as schools and hospitals. In response, MINUSCA has heightened efforts to protect civilians and restore governmental authority in the impacted areas.
